Heavy weather kept power crews busy

Hundreds Rockville Centre residents experienced power outages on Sunday, some of which were likely a result of heavy rain and gusty winds from powerful thunderstorms that raked the area.

Early on Aug. 21, from about midnight to 4 a.m., 41 customers on the east side of the village by Winding Road and the Loch lost power. According to Rockville Centre spokesman Jeff Kluewer, trees and branches that fell on the power lines caused the early morning outage.

From about 3 a.m. to 7:30 a.m., another 100 business district customers lost power in the vicinity of Sunrise Highway and Park Avenue. Kluewer said this outage was a result of underground cable failure from standing water that flooded.

Later the same day, from about 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., 650 residents, from Brower Avenue to Hempstead Avenue, Hamilton and Princeton roads to DeMott Avenue, four dead ends north of Hewitt Elementary School, Fountain and Berkshire roads, four dead-ends between Arrandale and Roxen roads and Dogwood Road to DeMott Avenue from Hempstead Avenue to the golf course, lost power when wires on Morris Avenue between Hamilton and DeMott burned, possibly due to lightning.
