Browne to run again

The following is an open letter to the residents of Rockville Centre.

To the Editor:

I am pleased to announce my candidacy for a seat in the Nassau County Legislature. As you may know, I ran for this seat two years ago, losing a tough campaign by a single percentage point. Nonetheless, because of my continued disappointment with our leadership on the county level, I have once more decided to seek your support this November.

Like many municipalities, Nassau County faces tremendous fiscal challenges. The county is under the watch of a state control board and is struggling to bring its budget into balance without raising taxes. Our property-tax burden remains outrageously high and is a serious threat to the long-term viability of our neighborhoods, as these levies strangle the real estate market and drive people away, especially young families and senior citizens.

These are serious, challenging times that call for fresh, independent leadership at every level of government. I hope you will give me the chance to provide such leadership as the county representative for Rockville Centre and Baldwin. I look forward to seeing you on the campaign trail this fall.

Swift response

prevented disaster

To the Editor:

My husband and I are very grateful to the Rockville Centre police and fire departments for their immediate response to our 911 call on Aug. 29. Within a minute or two, they were in our home investigating the cause of a burning smell and smoke in our basement.

Everyone who responded was courteous, professional and concerned. To all the volunteer firefighters who protect our village, a heartfelt thank you, and especially to those who responded when our home was threatened. Their swift action prevented what might have become a disastrous fire, and for that we are very thankful.
