Summertime is the most popular season families tend to go on vacations. Kids are out of school, the weather is warm, and it’s the peak time for travel for many tourists.

However, it’s also the most expensive. Flight costs tend to skyrocket during the summer months due to the high demand.

With this in mind, travel agent Keith Voets of Magical Dad Vacations said proper planning is crucial when traveling in the summer.

“There’s a common misconception that you can get your best deal at the last minute — that’s rarely the case,” Voets said. “Especially the cost of airfare these days, planning a vacation is so important to get the best deals.”

How to get a steal on your next vacation

Voets recommends booking a vacation around six to nine months in advance in order to snag discounts on airfare. All-inclusive trips are also a huge money-saver, he added.

Voets also advises clients to travel during off-peak times instead of summertime or holiday breaks if they are able to do so, as it is another way of securing cheaper flights and accommodations.

However, as a parent himself, he understands that is not always an option. But, that doesn’t mean a client shouldn’t be entitled to the best deal possible.

For the month of August, Magical Dad Vacations is promoting a free hotel voucher to anyone who books an all-inclusive resort vacation in Mexico or the Caribbean. Clients can choose from the following vouchers:

Voets added he is happy to work with clients on financing plans if they want the option to pay for a vacation over a specific time period.

There’s no waiting when working with a travel agent

The beauty of working with a travel agent is they vet and personalize everything to fit a clients’ specific needs.

Voets said he is able to find bargains that work best for the type of vacation a client is looking to plan.

For those looking to visit Disney, for example, Voets suggests making preparations early because you never know what deals might pop up. If there’s a promotion or a discount available closer to a person’s stay, Voets can book it even if it wasn’t in their original vacation plan.

“(Travel agents) should be watching out for you,” Voets said. “We do oftentimes have the ability to change your rate and take advantage of whatever (the resort, cruise ship, etc.) is offering.”

Avoid third-party travel sites

Sometimes booking deals on discount travel websites can be deceiving, Voets said. There are often hidden resort fees and certain regulations that travel agents don’t operate under.

Booking flights through third-party sites is also risky because cancellations can happen last minute — and potentially no refund.

“We can be an advocate for you when necessary,” Voets said. “With those discount websites, you have to read the fine print.”
