Hundreds gathered at the Rockville Links Country Club on Monday for the Rockville Centre Community Fund’s 31st annual Mayor’s Golf Classic and Dinner.

The event serves as the primary fundraiser for the Community Fund, a not-for-profit charity founded in 1987 that helps those in need, including seniors, single parents and victims of disasters. Over the last three decades, the fund has raised more than $1.6 million. Proceeds from this year’s Golf Classic had not yet been counted at press time Tuesday.

Golfers enjoyed a day on the course and later joined fellow residents, elected officials and community leaders that evening for dinner, during which the village recognized the Rockville Centre Lacrosse Club and Ellen White, who was named the 2018 Eugene J. Murray Outstanding Citizenship Award recipient.

The RVC Lacrosse Club encourages participation in youth lacrosse at all levels of ability and skill by fostering broad-based participation. It provides a fun experience that will allow the players to learn the game while growing their athletic ability and learning about teamwork, good sportsmanship and commitment.

White, a Rockville Centre resident for over two decades, is the creative force behind South Side High School’s Centre Stage program, an inclusive theater program in which general and special-education students stage a performance each year. It was through her experience with Centre Stage that prompted her to co-found Backyard Players & Friends, an inclusive art-based program designed to enhance the social and interpersonal skills for teenagers and young adults of all abilities.

The Herald’s Person of the Year in 2014, White also served as president of Rockville Centre Lacrosse for a number of years and helped found the girl’s lacrosse program.

“It was really such a wonderful honor,” White said, noting the event’s large turnout and the importance of the Community Fund. “I just feel like I’m so lucky to live in a town where people understand how important it is to help others in their community.”
