More roads improved

More village roads will be renovated this summer. The board of trustees approved $3.4 million worth of bids for work on nine roads at the April 30 briefing session.

This work, part of the 2015 road program, includes improvements to the water mains. “This is an ongoing project,” said Harry Weed, superintendent of the water department. “As we do the roads, we go in and review the size of the water mains.” Weed said that new water mains would be eight inches wide instead of four, which increases water capacity.

Both bids will be paid for with a bond that will be issued after the new fiscal year starts on June 1, while the roadwork will be supplemented with a bond that was issued in February 2014. These bonds will be repaid over the next 15 years from the general fund.

AII Allen Industries will do the water main replacement for $936,425, while Laser will do the roadwork for $2.5 million.

These roads are:

- Strathmore Road from Long Beach Road to Surrey Lane.

- Surrey Lane from the dead end to the village line between Salem Road and McDermott Road.

- Varick Court from Harvard Avenue to Hempstead Avenue.

- Judson Place from Lakeside Drive to Harvard Avenue.

- Royal Court form Judson Place to the dead end.

- DeMott Place from River Avenue to Lawson Avenue.

- Woods Avenue from Rockaway Avenue to the village line between Driscoll and Cleveland Avenue.

- Driscoll Avenue from Woods Avenue to the dead end.

The village will also be milling and overlaying top asphalt on Broadway. Currently, the village is working on the 2014 road program, which includes Arrandale Road.
