Report: village water high in iron

Aside from the iron, Rockville Centre water is almost perfect.

In its 2014 water quality drinking report, the village noted that the level of iron in the water is 330 micrograms per liter. The regulatory limit is 300. Otherwise, the village is below the limit on all other contaminants.

According to Harry Weed, superintendent of the water department, the iron is naturally occurring in the ground water. Iron is not harmful and the regulatory limit represents when the water looks rusty and creates stains.

“We haven’t had a major problem,” said Weed. “It depends on how much we’re pumping and when.”

Clothing and fixture stains can be removed with detergents such as Oxiclean. In the meantime, the water department is looking to install an iron filtration plant on Maple Avenue. Weed said they are currently in the research and information stage of this project.
