Collecting for homeless veterans
The women of the American Legion Auxiliary of Rockville Centre are collecting coats, hats and gloves for homeless veterans who will attend the Veterans StandDown on Nov. 21 at the Marine Corps Reserve Headquarters, 605 Stewart Ave., Garden City from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Sponsored by Nassau County Veterans Services and local veterans groups, this event will provide free clothing, toiletries and assistance to those who served our country and now need our help. Holiday Food Drive
Through Dec. 31, the Rockville Centre/Lakeview Economic Opportunity Commission is holding a food drive for the holiday season. Donated items will be received at the EOC's office at 140 N. Centre Ave. Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. For more information, call (516) 764-4500.
Village Art Club
The Village Art Club will present noted pastel artist and instructor, Arlene Reuth Urban who will demonstrate creating a pastel portrait from a photograph on Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in the downstairs meeting room of the Rockville Centre Library, 221 N. Village Ave. Bring a photograph of a favorite person; you may be the lucky winner in which case you will be the recipient of a portrait by Urban. Admission is free and open to non-members. Symphony Concert
Pianist Karen Faust Baer will join the South Shore Symphony for its first performance at Molloy College's Madison Theatre on Nov. 20 at 8 p.m., playing Chopin's "Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor." Also on the program are Beethoven's "Overture to Consecration of the House," and Dvorak's "Symphony # 9 from the New World." Tickets are $18 for the orchestra and $10 for the mezzanine. Interfaith Service of Thanksgiving
On Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m., join your neighbors and the Rockville Centre Interfaith Clergy Association in community, prayer and gratitude at the 61st annual Interfaith Service of Thanksgiving, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 240 Lincoln Ave. Father Robert Herrick from the Church of the Ascension will lead the service and clergy from other Rockville Centre churches and synagogues will participate. Homework Helpers, a partnership program between the Sandel Senior Center Service Corps and the Rockville Centre Public Library offers help with homework to students in grades 1-6 every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday between the hours of 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. in the Children’s Room of the Library. Display Cases
Rockville Centre Homemakers
Craft items created by members of the Homemakers Council of Nassau County Rockville Centre Chapter will be featured in the display cases of the Rockville Centre Public Library throughout the month of November.
Homemakers is a non profit community service organization. Members learn and teach crafts, sewing, knitting, crocheting, cooking and nutrition. Daniel Tommasino is a 17-year-old senior at Oceanside High School. His fascination with photography began four years ago when he received a simple digital camera for his middle school graduation. He began taking his camera with him everywhere and taking pictures of everything. Since then, Daniel has graduated to a far more complex camera. This exhibit focuses on cars and vehicles, one of Daniel’s favorite subjects. The photos capture interesting features, from the beauty of sparkling chrome to rusting metal and peeling paint. The public is invited to sign the photographer’s guest book and make comments.

Food donations needed
The Rec. Center is accepting donations of canned, dry goods and frozen turkeys or coupons for the needy in the community. Bring donations Monday though Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. before Thanksgiving. Coupons may be mailed or dropped off at the Rec Center.
Nursery School Openings
There are limited openings remaining in the morning Pre Pre Kindergarten classes, which meet four days a week from 9 to 11:30 a.m. ; the morning Pre Kindergarten classes that meet Monday through Friday from 9 to 11:30 a.m., as well as the afternoon Pre Pre Kindergarten classes which meets Tuesday and Thursday from 12:15-2:45 p.m. Call the Rec Center for more information.
Operation Christmas Child
The Recreation Department is collecting school supplies and toiletries for needy children. Donations, which must be in their original packaging , may be dropped off at the Rec Center Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. For information call (516) 678-9339.
Winter Program Recreation
The Recreation Department will start taking reservations for winter programs beginning Nov. 7. Flyers are available at the Rec Center.
Birthday Parties and Rentals
The Rec Center offers age-appropriate birthday parties to Village residents for pre-school and elementary age children, seven days a week. Open Gym Program
The main gymnasium of the Rec. Center will be open for free-play basketball for grades 4 and up on Saturday afternoons from 2-4:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 29. The evening open gym for grades 6 and up will begin Oct. 7 and Saturday, Oct. 8 from 7:30 to 10:15 p.m.. Valid Recreation Cards for 2011-2012 are needed for entry.
