Community Party

The seventh annual free community party, sponsored by the Vineyard Church is set for Sept. 10 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Rockville Centre Village Green (on Maple Avenue between Lee and Morris avenues). There will be organized "active play" games, free hot dogs, popcorn, cotton candy and Italian ices, a watermelon eating contest, children's crafts and face painting, a bouncy castle and a free IPod raffle for those 18 and older. The raindate is Sept. 24.

Open House - Molloy Institute for Lifelong Learning

Molloy Institute for Lifelong Learning (Mill) is sponsoring an open house to attract new members to join an interesting and invigorating program for retirees or people who work part time. Join the open house on Sept. 10 at 10 a.m., in the Reception Room in Molloy's Kellenberg Hall. Classes are held Tuesdays and/or Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Presentations are delivered by Molloy faculty or professionals from Legal, Health Care, Literary, Scientific, Political and Musical Arenas. There is an annual fee for this program. Fall yoga session

Central Synagogue of Nassau County, 430 DeMott Ave. is again sponsoring a Fall session, with evening classes of yoga. The classes are open to yoga students of all levels. The Tree of Life Yoga will be offering a series of 12 classes each, beginning on the evening of Sept.13, at 7:30 p.m. The series of classes is available for $150 (you save $30) or you may pay as you go for $15 a class. There is a special introductory offer: For new students — the first class on Sept. 13 is free. Members of the community are invited to participate. Kids' Fest

Sept. 17 from noon to 4 p.m. Special open house celebration at the Rec Center, 111 N. Oceanside Road. An afternoon of program information, demonstrations, music, rides and fun. The Lions Club Duck Pluck has relocated and will be featured at this event for the first time. The theme of this Duck Pluck is "Ducks for Diabetes." For $5 you can sponsor a duck at the fundraiser and become eligible to win a number of prizes including gift certificates, toys, home goods, electronics, $1,000 in cash and a trip for two to Ireland. Catholic High School Entrance Exam Prep Course

Molloy College’s Continuing Education Program is offering a Catholic High School Entrance Exam prep course for eighth graders planning to attend any of the 10 Catholic high schools on Long Island. Students will review the math, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar skills that will be tested on the exam and will learn test-taking strategies to help them work faster and more confidently to maximize their scores. Six Saturday class sessions begin Sept. 17 at the Rockville Centre campus and Sept. 18 at the Suffolk Center in East Farmingdale, and will be completed in time for the Oct. 29 exam. Fee is $ 375. AOH Feis and Festival

The traditional celebration of Irish dance, music, piping, and athletics is presented by the Nasau County Board of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Sunday, Sept. 18, 9 a.m.- 6 p.m.; Roman Catholic Mass is celebrated at 11 a.m. $10, children under 16 free. Stephen Siller Tunnel-to Towers annual charity Run/Walk

Register before midnight on Sept. 19 to avoid late fees for the annual Tunnel to Towers Run on Sept. 25 that retraces the steps of hero firefighter Stephen Siller, a former Rockville Centre resident, who died trying to help others on Sept. 11, 2001. The popular 5K run, which attracts thousands of runners and walkers from the New York metropolitan area, starts in Red Hook, Brooklyn, continues through the Battery Tunnel and winds up in downtown Manhattan where a celebratory concert, and speeches, will take place. The run is being dupli- cated in sites across the U.S. Proceeds from the run and other donations support the Stephen Siller Let Us Do Good Foundation that has established programs as a way to make a lasting and positive difference in the lives of others. These programs, In the Line of Duty and In the Name of Love, bring hope to grieving children, healing to firefighters and families of our military, who sacrifice life and limb in the line of duty and love and hope to the most broken and vulnerable children. Pinwheels for Peace

Join Divine Yoga to create a community art project about peace on Sept. 21, the International Day of Peace, on the front lawn of St. Marks United Methodist Church, 200 Hempstead Ave., from noon to 6 p.m. Visit the pinwheel “design center” where art supplies will be available to create a personalized pinwheel to plant in the church’s Peace Garden, where a free family yoga class will be held at 4:30. Adult Comedy Night Fundraiser

Join the Fifth Grade Outdoor Education Fundraising Committee as it hosts an Adult Comedy Night, open to those 18 years and older, at South Side Middle School on Sept. 23. Comedians John Larocchia, Carie Karavas, Eric Tartaglione and John Santo will perform. Mayor's golf and tennis classic and dinner

The Mayor’s annual Golf and Tennis Classic and Dinner, the primary fundraiser for the Rockville Centre Community Fund, will honor former Village Justice, the Hon. Robert Williams on Sept. 26 at the Seawane Country Club in Hewlett Harbor. Tickets and sponsorships for the all-day event, as well as journal ads are still available. The donation for lunch, cocktails and dinner as well as a round of golf is $350. The donation for tennis, lunch and dinner is $225. Dinner-only tickets are $125. Each year the Community Fund provides confidential assistance to hundreds of people in emergency need. Unlike other non-profit charities, the fund is directed exclusively to Rockville Centre residents, who have received nearly $1 million since the fund was founded in 1987.

Friendship Fair 2011

Oct. 14-15: The Church of the Ascension, 71 N. Village Ave. presents this admission-free fair every two years, offering a wide range of items old and new including bargain-priced jewelry, collectibles, crafts, antiques, and books. Hours for the Friday and Saturday fair, one of the largest of its kind on Long Island, are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. both days. Baked goods, jams and jellies will be among the foods available for take-home purchase and lunch, dinner and snack choices will offered for sale at moderate cost. PBA fundraiser for owners of E&W Deli

The Waxon family suffered a devastating loss this summer when a construction job in their business, E & W /Greystone Delicatessen on North Long Beach Road caused a fire that destroyed it. On Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. the Rockville Centre PBA will host a fundraiser at Kasey's Upstairs, 23 N. Park Ave. The cost for a ticket is $50. There are only 150 tickets available. There will be an open bar and unlimited select finger foods. There will also be raffles and a 50/50 with all proceeds going directly to the Waxons. On the big screen televisions the Jets will be playing the Dolphins. Come and support a business that has always supported Rockville Centre in every way possible. Special Class

The All-4-One yoga class is offered for children with special needs ages 3-to-13 on Saturdays 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. and 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. July 9 to 30. Call the Rec office for details.

Tennis Courts open

The Har-Tru courts adjacent to the Rec Center are open and ready for play. Courts are available seven days a week from 8 a.m. until dusk. Admission is by valid recreation card plus court fees

Aerobic Exercise Classes

Ongoing aerobic exercise classes by Nancy’s Aerobics are being offered on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings beginning at 7. Classes may be paid for by the session and are conducted in the air conditioned Rec Center gym.

Zumba Classes

The Zumba fitness program with Ruth Karhu is offered Thursdays from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. with babysitting available for a fee and Saturdays from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Pay as you go.

Birthday Parties

The Rec Center offers age-appropriate birthday parties to village residents from ages 2 to 12. Parties are offered Monday through Friday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. or 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday parties beginning at 10 a.m. or 12, 2 or 4 p.m. Detailed flyers are available at the Rec Center office or call (516) 678-9338 or 9339.

FALL 2011

Nursery School Openings

There are a limited number of openings in the Fall 2011 Nursery school Classes at the Rec Center. These classes are for children entering kindergarten in September 2012/13. Classes follow the RVC public school holiday schedule. Openings are in the morning and afternoon classes. There are also opportunities for extended day programs. Come by and see for yourself. In addition to the wonderful classrooms and gymnasiums, they boast one of the best outdoor playground facilities in the area. Call (516) 678-9339 for further information. Classes start on Sept. 12.

Time to register for fall programs

Applications for the Fall Program season are now available. The programs are scheduled to begin the week of Sept. 19th. All registrations are first-come first served and all participants must have valid Recreation Membership cards. Detailed flyers are available by calling (516) 678-9338 or 9339. New programs offered this year include: Happy Piano, Junior Jamboree, Roll Around Fun Card, Brush Strokes, Fencing, RVC Rec. Competition and Training Gymnastics Teams, Schoolhouse Chess, All 4 One Yoga and Zumba.

Kids' Fest — Saturday, Sept. 17

The Annual Kids’ Fest Open House celebration at the Rec. Center is scheduled for Saturday, Sept 17 from 12 Noon to 4 p.m. Representatives from all the village sports organizations will attend as well as the RVC Police , Fire Departments, Post Office, Library, Guild for the Arts , Lions Club and more. This is a free event for the community

to enjoy.

Bicycle Safety Week

The RVC Parks and Recreation Department and the Police Department , in cooperation with the RVC P.T.A. will again offer the Cycle with Care program at the five elementary schools during September. The inspections will take place at Wilson and Riverside schools on Tuesday, Sept. 13; at Covert and Watson schools on Wednesday, Sept. 14 and at Hewitt school on Thursday,

Sept. 15.

Part time jobs available

Residents who are at least 16 years old may apply to work part time on weekday and weekend programs, parties and special events. Applications are available at the Rec. Center office.

Inaugural Ball

Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. The Sandel Club Executive Committee will host a formal ball in honor of Mayor Frances X. Murray and the Rockville Centre Village Board of Trustees. Music provided by Wally Feith and the Moonlight Serenade Swing Band. Refreshments served.$8 per person.

SPEAKER SERIES

How to Get Up from a Fall

Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to noon. In this second part of the workshop you will learn specific tips and techniques to prevent devastating injury due to loss of balance and falls. Presented by Sportset of Rockville Centre.

Sandel Senior Men’s Club

The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. for breakfast and business. At 11 a.m., when available, guest speakers discuss topics of interest to men. A variety of trips and programs are scheduled for July and August.
