Rockville Centre Letters to the Editor: Sept. 29-Oct. 5, 2011

Herald is right on

To the Editor:

In the letter “A new low” (Sept. 15- 21), a writer from Roslyn Heights expressed her annoyance that the paper published the names of individuals who have been given tickets for public urination in the village. As a Rockville Centre resident who lives near the train station and has had numerous people urinate on my front lawn, I think the Herald is right on.

I’ve yelled out my window more times than I can count to ask people to stop and I get nasty and crude responses back. I don’t know how Roslyn Heights deals with this kind of problem, but if publishing the names of this type of offender helps to stop the behavior, please continue to publish away.

Don’t shoot the messenger

To the Editor:

Allow me to address the letter “A new low” (Sept. 15-21), in which the writer objects to the paper publishing the names of people arrested for crimes, calling the practice “tasteless, unnecessary and humiliating to the people named.” She goes on to cite six listings of people ticketed for public urination and asks, “Do I have to know this?”

The answers are several. You don’t need to read the Crime Watch column. You should also know that the column is based on public court records, and it is the only way many village residents learn about what crimes are going on around them. And as for the embarrassment and humiliation of the people being ticketed? Perhaps they should think about that before they use the streets as toilets, creating a smelly mess and a public nuisance.

In any event, don’t blame the Herald. That is truly shooting the messenger!

Crack down

on inconsiderate patrons

To the Editor:

Not owning a vehicle has been unexpectedly pleasant for most of the time. Because of this decision, I have become a seasoned railroad commuter on the Babylon-bound train from the Rockville Centre station. In addition to the train, I walk to and from the station to my job in Bellmore.

I make these trips four times a week. They are actually most pleasant, despite my thoughts to the contrary. I enjoy the fresh air and an awakening leg stretch before a day of work, as well as scenery I overlooked in my days as a car driver on the major roads into Bellmore.
