Rockville Centre Library to close from Aug. 29 to Sept. 20

According to Maureen Chiofalo, the director of the Rockville Centre Public Library, the renovations of the facility’s ceilings and lighting will begin on Aug. 29.

The Children’s Room, which will be repainted as well, will be the first to close. Construction in the adult section of the library will begin on Sept. 3. There will be no Internet access in the Children’s Room beginning Aug. 26, and no Internet in the main library beginning Sept. 1. The entire library is expected to reopen on Sept. 20.

“Of course, all of this is relying on the materials coming in, everything getting done on time and that we don’t find a big problem,” Chiofalo said.

Residents can use all neighboring libraries, including the facilities in Oceanside and Baldwin, to take out and return books, although books on reserve will not be available until the library reopens. There will be no fines for books due during the closure, Chiofalo said, because residents have no obligation to go to another library to return borrowed books.

The library’s Sept. 8 Board of Trustees meeting will be held at 7:45 p.m. at the Sandel Senior Center instead of the library. “Other than that, we haven’t booked any programs because we knew we would be closed,” Chiofalo said. Programs are set to resume Oct. 3.
