Rockville Centre mayor's task force seeks youth volunteers, projects

Mayor Francis Murray and a group of parent volunteers are recruiting teenagers for a Youth Task Force to take on a variety of community service jobs around the village.

“Our mission is to encourage community pride and community service in our young adults,” Murray said.

The Youth Task Force is open to all Rockville Centre residents in the 7th through the 12th grades, according to Bridget Kelly and Maryellen McGowan, program coordinators.

“We are asking for a commitment of 36 voluntary hours a year for such jobs as cleaning up in the downtown business district and on the playing fields weekend mornings, planting and weeding designated areas in the village, coordinating food drives and providing after-school tutoring and men-

toring,” Kelly said.

Interested youth and adult volunteers may e-mail their name, age, grade and contact information to youthtaskforce@rvcny.us or visit the village website at www.rvcny.us to fill out on online sign-up form. They can also call the Mayor’s Office at (516) 678-9260.

The Task Force is also reaching out to schools, temples and churches, and not-for-profit agencies for community service projects suitable for Task Force volunteers. Adults wishing to volunteer or to suggest volunteer projects should also contact the Task Force.

“We hope to become a clearinghouse, linking committed youth volunteers to worthwhile community service projects,” Kelly said.
