Rockville Centre’s Paul Keller was presented with the “Unsung Hero Award” at the April 20 meeting of the Freeport Board of Education.

The presentation was made by Archer Street Elementary School Principal Paula Lein. Keller, who has volunteered at Archer for the past five years, is the liaison between the school and the National Council of Jewish Women, South Shore Section. Seven years ago, NCJW initiated a volunteer program at Archer which, today, has 16 volunteers working with 45 children who need tutoring in the 3Rs.

Keller not only works two days each week with the children, but also communicates with the volunteers, manages their scheduling and resolves any issues that arise. The plaque presented to him was “in celebration of his selfless commitment and dedication to the students.”

At the same meeting, Debra McQuillan, president of the Freeport Board of Education, presented Keller with a ruby-adorned lapel pin in appreciation of his service to the Freeport school district. About 200 people attended the meeting which was enhanced by orchestral and choral presentations by Archer Street students.
