Zoe Roman, a Hewitt Elementary School fifth grader, is one of two Nassau County finalists from Rockville Centre who will be going on to the National PTA Reflections competition. Dana Glick, a senior at South Side High School, is the other.

Zoe received her Nassau County award on April 14 at the Brookside School in North Merrick. She also won a New York State PTA Award of Excellence and was a runner-up for the Su Peifer award, selected as a top entry in the category of dance choreography.

Zoe’s winning video was a jazz dance she choreographed and performed to the song “Together We Can” by the Cheetah Girls. It was her entry for this year’s Reflections competition whose theme was also titled “Together We Can.” According to her family, she made up the dance and her sisters filmed her performing it on the Hewitt school playground, when no one else was around.

Dana’s song, “Together We Can,” was recorded by her guitar teacher at his studio. The judges said they liked her “go green” theme. Dana studies voice, guitar and piano. She is into recycling and helping the environment, so she wrote about it, and created the tune. She was inspired by how her family recycles and cares about the environment, and she’s worked with fellow girl scouts for many years on these important issues.

Deanna Mostowfi of South Side High School was the runner-up in photography for the Amelie A. Wallace Arts-in Education Award and was also a photography finalist in the Nassau Region. She recently was also a finalist in the “Embracing Our Differences” international outdoor art exhibit, which displayed a billboard of her work in Sarasota, Fla.

In addition, Joshua Kellner of South Side Middle School was a Nassau Region finalist in musical composition. Anthony Amorese of Riverside Elementary School, Dylan Costello of Covert Elementary School and Kyle Kutner of South Side Middle School were Nassau Region finalists in the visual arts category. And Kyle was also a New York State PTA Award of Merit winner.
