Rockville Centre Youth Council enjoys sweet success

More than 75 local teens packed Five Pennies Creamery on April 1 to enjoy free ice cream in an event hosted by the Rockville Centre Youth Council, in partnership with Dan Levine, the owner of the new sweet shop on N. Park Avenue.

As classic rock and roll and Motown favorites on the store’s sound system set a festive tone, Levine and his staff kept the eatery open an extra two hours to host the party.

Mayor Mary Bossart, who is running for a second term, and trustee-candidate Michelle Lavacca-Sewell were on hand to lend their support. “It was our pleasure to attend the RVC Youth Council event,” said Bossart in a written comment. “As mayor it is heartening to see local business owners such as Daniel Levine of Five Pennies providing support to community groups such as the RVC Youth Council. More importantly, as mothers, Michelle Sewell and I are grateful to you and your organization for providing safe, drug and alcohol-free recreational opportunities for the young people of the village.”

Youth Council co-Chairman Michael Caffrey thanked Five Pennies for offering its space for the party, since a constant complaint of teens is having no where

to go.

Caffrey said the Youth Council is finalizing plans for a coffee house night at Revolution Yoga on April 30, for open basketball and ultimate frisbee nights at the Recreation Center in May and for an end-of-year event with TD Bank.

“We would love to see the Rockville Centre business community join our mission in offering healthy nights for the young people in our village,” Caffrey said, “and we would love to have other businesses offer their space or underwrite an event for us.”

Anyone interested in helping to sponsor an event, Caffrey said, can contact the Rockville Centre Youth Council at info@rvcyouthconcil.org.
