The Rockville Centre Public Library Board of Trustees has released its proposed operating budget for 2017-18 year. Overall, the library’s tax levy, or the amount of its budget paid for through property taxes, increased by 1.28 percent or $43,510. The library’s total proposed budget is roughly $3.5 million.

Library goers can expect a bigger program budget, as well as 12 new computers; a laptop bar with access to electrical outlets, new chairs and benches, an expanded digital collection, added security systems, more space for the Family Place play area and additional tables for the second floor quiet room.

The increase is partially offset by savings in the library’s DVD collection, printing and postage expenses and online reference subscriptions. “The staff is very creative in terms of how they spend the dollars and stretch them as far as they can,” board president, Bill Murray said. “We’re very appreciative of that. The success of our library is due to them.”

In particular, he credited Library Director Catherine Overton with finding savings wherever she could. Residents can now use the library’s printers remotely; either from within the building or from home. He said she had sought to save on printer and copier leases and ended up getting more functionality for less money.

Murray — a 12-year veteran of the board — is the one trustee up for reelection. He is running unopposed. Residents have the opportunity to vote to approve the budget and show support for Murray on May 16. A more detailed view of the budget can be found on the library’s website.
