The Rockville Centre U13 Strikers girls soccer team was honored during the Nov. 7 village trustee meeting for winning their second straight Long Island Junior Soccer’s Sportsmanship Award.

The award recognizes soccer players and teams who exemplify Long Island Junior Soccer’s mission to develop responsible citizens through the lessons of teamwork and fair play. Each member of the team and their coaches received citations during the meeting.

“To see a team like this at such a young age come out and be recognized for this is really something incredible,” said Trustee Emilio Grillo.

In addition to being honored for their sportsmanship on the field, the girls have contributed to the Rockville Centre community off of it. Last year, they raised money to sponsor children and families for the “Make a Difference Christmas Effort”, which they will be doing again this year. The team held bake sales, shopped, and wrapped toys, clothing, and gift cards for those in need.

The girls also sold headbands at local soccer practices and games this year, raising additional money that will be donated to Boulder Crest Retreat, a wellness center dedicated to helping combat veterans and their families.

The Strikers were first in their division as of Nov. 7.
