The Rockville Centre elementary school held its 18th annual “Puttin’ on the Hits” variety show on March 23 at South Side Middle School to benefit the Raymar Children’s Fund.

About 230 children from all of the grades boogied down to 24 songs from yesteryear and today, including Kenny Loggins’ “Footloose”, Katie Perry’s “Firework”, The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” and Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling.” All of the rehearsals took place before school and spanned three sessions a week for three weeks since January.

The event was coordinated by fourth-grade teacher Susan DeRosa, STELLAR teacher Chris Figaro, fifth-grade teacher Mara Turchin, Raymar Fund board member Janet Cisario and teacher aide Stacey Costello.

“The show was a huge success and the kids did a fantastic job during the show,” Costello said.

Visitors participated in a silent auction, raffle baskets, a 50-50 drawing and snacks at the concession stand. About $10,000 was raised that night.

The Raymar Children’s Fund was created in 2005 and provides children with enrichment experiences and programs while giving financial aid and assistance to needy families in the community. The inspiration for the charity came when principal Darren Raymar noticed the amount of money being raised during one of the earlier variety shows.
