South Side Middle School students raised money for Japan

Several days after school ended, students from South Side Middle School traveled to Manhattan to present a check for $770 to Michiko Grasso of the Japan Society. The Japan Society is an American nonprofit organization that brings the people of Japan and the United States closer together through mutual understanding, appreciation and cooperation.

The money raised by the students is being directed towards the Japan Society’s Earthquake Relief Fund. The effort to raise funds was led by the Posner family of Rockville Centre who has close family ties to Japan. Seventh graders Naomi, Hannah and Jason Posner made personal contributions, and with the help of friends and classmates collected donations in the school cafeteria.

To further help in the effort, teacher Bob Baulch’s Strategies for Life class organized a Half-Court Shot Contest which attracted dozens of students and several hundred dollars in donations from students and teachers. The money raised by the students was topped off by a generous donation by seventh grader Brian Scala.
