St. Agnes Cathedral School in Rockville Centre continues a literary tradition

More than 30 people from the community — including village employees, elected officials, business owners, church leaders, veterans and medical professionals — were invited to share their love of reading with the students at the St. Agnes Cathedral School.

Volunteers from the community gathered in the school cafeteria with their selected books early on Friday, Nov. 17, for the school’s annual Community Readers’ Day event. Students then filed in to escort each of their special guests to a different classroom where they would share the book of their choice.

“We have one special day each year where community members come in and read to the students,” Cecilia St. John, principal of the St. Agnes Cathedral School, said. “Their presence is so helpful to fostering their love of reading.”

The St. Agnes Cathedral School’s annual tradition started back in 1999 with the goal of helping students build better relationships and connections with their community, while also encouraging them to read.

“It’s a literary journey that we take together,” St. John adds.

She said that while the school thrives on its teachers and their uncanny ability to encourage students to read, the event offers the community a chance to share some of their favorite books and provides students with the opportunity to develop a deeper passion for literacy and understanding.
