Traffic safety lights coming to schools

For a while, residents have been waiting for Nassau County to complete installation of traffic safety lights outside the Hewitt and Covert elementary schools.

The safety lights, which display a driver’s current speed, were supposed to be installed at the intersection of DeMott Avenue and Hempstead Avenue, outside of the Hewitt school, and at Long Beach Road and Willow Street, in front of Covert.

For many weeks now, the pole foundations and all the underground electronics and conduit work for the signs have been installed, but the signs themselves have been absent.

According to outgoing County Legislator Joseph Scannell, the signs are on backorder and the Nassau County Department of Public Works are waiting on a delivery.

“The poles and the speed awareness equipment are currently on order but have not come in yet,” Scannell said in an email to the Herald. “[The DPW doesn’t] have a delivery date as of yet but they anticipate approximately sometime in January that they will be up and running.”
