Village fixing water ‘site conditions’

Late last month, when the village sent out “This Month in Rockville Centre,” it included a letter explaining more violations that the water department received.

Neither of the violations that were reported had anything to do with the quality of the water, and one had nothing to do with the way the village manages the water department.

The first violations were given to the village by the Nassau County Department of Health in 2005, and involved “site conditions that needed to be addressed,” according to village spokeswoman Julie Scully. According to the village, it was going to need nine years to make the changes the Health Department required.

“Some of the items were large-scale items where detailed planning and design were necessary to accomplish the requirements,” Scully said. According to Scully, many of the changes were made. However, others needed more comprehensive planning and design, and were not completed by the 2014 date. Because of that, the village was cited again.

“The village has taken care of many of the concerns,” said Scully. “Other matters are in the final design phase and waiting for final Health Department approval.”

The village, however, will not discuss the nature of the changes that it has needed more than a decade to make due to security reasons.

According to the letter the village distributed, all contracts for the work have been — or soon will be — awarded, and the work has been approved by the Health Department. The village expects to complete the improvements by Aug. 16, 2016.

The second violation the village wrote residents about was one the Herald reported on in October. The village was cited by the Health Department because not enough residents completed mandatory backflow device inspections.

The citation came in May of 2014, and was for the village failing to attain 100 percent backflow-prevention device testing for 2010 through 2013.
