Village still weighing pool decision

Plans for a Rockville Centre pool are still waiting on some information from the village.

Although the Aquatic Center Evaluation Committee has narrowed down its picks for the location of a pool, work has stalled since the spring. The committee is waiting for information from village attorney A. Thomas Levin to see if there are any restrictions on properties identified as possible pool locations, particularly the Recreation Center and south of the Dean Skelos Sports Complex on Peninsula Boulevard. Until then, committee work has been put on hold.

According to Committee Chairman Jack Matthews, the village is unsure if a document regarding the non-residential use of the Recreation Center between the state and the village was signed some 50 years ago. Such an agreement could limit a pool on Recreation Center grounds. He said that Levin had found a copy of the document but it was unsigned, which makes it unclear if the agreement was executed. Levin is still searching for a second copy of this document to clear this up.

Mill River Park has also been considered if the top two picks for a pool location are not available.

The push for a pool began last July, when resident Mary Beth Kearns presented a petition to the village board supporting the construction of a public pool. As of now, the petition has more than 500 signatures. Kearns’s husband, Christopher Kearns, is a member of the committee.

Last summer, Mayor Francis X. Murray and the board reached an agreement with Lynbrook in which 100 RVC families can purchase memberships at the Lynbrook village pool for $750.
