Watson raises money for Haiti

Watson Elementary School may be one of the smaller schools in Rockville Centre, but there wasn't anything small about the amount of money its community raised to benefit the Red Cross International Relief Fund for Haiti. Students at the school recently completed a two-week read-a-thon, reading a little extra each night for a good cause and finished hundreds of books to do their part for Haiti.

In addition to the read-a-thon, the school's students, parents and staff also participated in a successful toy swap and bake sale, pulling together to make a difference. The school's staff brought in baked goods, and parents and students contributed gently used, unwanted toys. The gymnasium was filled with goodies to buy. As a result of these fundraisers, members of the Watson Elementary School community raised over $3,500 to aid Haiti.

“It’s so wonderful to have such a caring community come together to help others in a time of need,” said Principal Joan Waldman, who said she was proud of her students and the amount of money and support they raised. She said the Watson community turned an unfortunate series of events into a powerful example of caring and compassion for others.
