Women who make a difference

Dr. Ilene Gold Glick was one of 11 women honored by the Long Island sections of the National Council of Jewish Women at their 16th annual awards luncheon on May 11 at Temple Avodah in Oceanside. The theme of the luncheon was Women + Advocacy = Power.

Glick, a long time resident of Rockville Centre, is a retired dentist who, as a volunteer, has spent many hours leading projects and advocating on behalf of women’s issues for the NCJW South Shore Section.

Special honors at the luncheon were given to Nassau County Legislator Judy Jacobs, for her contributions to empowering women in government and policy, and for her leadership qualities. For its services in fostering public debate and sound government policy, NCJW organizers also recognized The League of Women Voters of Nassau County.

At the luncheon, much needed supplies were collected for The Interfaith Nutrition Network in Hempstead, and a special donation from the Long Island Sections to the NCJW-Israel Granting Program was announced.

Of the 11 honorees, seven belong to NCJW’s East Meadow Section. They are: Margot Feldman, a resident of North Merrick and Miriam Goldstein, Estelle Jaffe, Ellie Schild and Geri Zimmerman, all from East Meadow. In addition, the late Paula Kavett, past president of the East Meadow Section, was honored in memory.

Additional honorees were Sophie Rosen, a resident of Floral Park who volunteers with the NCJW-Lakeville Section and is a retired LIH hospital nursing administrator; Aleen Barash, a Valley Stream resident who volunteers with the Peninsula section and for many years had chaired NCJW’s New York State-Public Affairs Committee and Dianne Reinhardt, a retired teacher from Westbury who volunteers with the Westbury section. The late Helen Firestone, a resident of Bellerose who was also a former teacher and volunteer with the NCJW-Lakeville section, was remembered for her gift of bringing people together.
