A snow-inspired STEAM activity at Harbor Elementary

With plenty of snow right outside the windows, kindergartners at Seaford Harbor Elementary School worked on a project inspired by the view. Two dozen students took part in the lunchtime STEAM — science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics — activity on Jan. 10 to make snow globes. 

Assistant Principal Caroline Schozer led the project. Each student received a blue paper plate and drew snowflakes before gluing on either a snowman or a penguin. Fake snow was added before each winter scene was enclosed with a small, clear plate. Children were then able to take their snow globes home.

“It’s just a fun activity,” Ms. Schozer said. “It’s a simple project and it fits in with the season.”

The school hosts several STEAM activities each month for different grade levels, Projects have been led by administrators, teachers, parents and professionals. Ms. Schozer explained that the activities encourage exploration and help students develop their problem-solving and critical thinking skills. When a child asks for assistance, the facilitator will typically respond with, “How do you think it should be done?”
