Fishermen embrace new Jones Beach pier

Just off Ocean Parkway lies the Green Island fishing pier, which has been a topic of discussion for 12 years.

Local fishermen spoke of the pier as if it was some sort of legend. Nevertheless, the pier was completed last summer.

Some fishermen utilized the Green Island fishing spot even before it was officially open, as it was easy to get to, provided a lot of fish and was a place to call their own.

“My favorite part is the scenery and convenience,” Robert Munoz from Levittown said. “It’s right off the parkway and you don’t need to walk far to get to your fishing spot.”

The pier lies below the last bridge before Jones Beach State Park on Ocean Parkway. The spot has a panoramic view of Jones Beach Inlet.

While fishermen used to visit Green Island prior to the pier being built, they’d risk getting ticketed for parking in the area.

“Having a permit is nice now,” Larry Puccio, a Lindenhurst resident, said. “We (my wife and I) have a baby and it’s accessible to just park, go out and fish. It’s an asset to a lot of people and a good family experience.”
