Organizers of the annual Long Island Pride parade announced today that the event, originally scheduled for June 14 at Jones Beach State Park, has been postponed. No alternate date has been set for the event.

It is the 30th year for the event, which draws thousands.

“We are living in unprecedented times,” said David Kimnick, president and chief executive officer of the LGBT Network, which sponsors the event. “One of the things we know is that social distancing and staying home is saving lives, and that is he most important piece of knowledge that we can hold onto at this time.”

In addition to the parade, the festival was to have included music, a Pride 5K Fun Run, a food fair and a pet parade.

Klemnick said the details of a virtual festival would be announced soon. “Being at home does not mean we cannot be out,” he said.

“Pride is the vaccine of hope for so many young people who aren’t out,” Klemnick said. “They see … tens of thousands of Long Islanders smiling and joining together as one. Simply put, Pride saves lives, and it must continue with whatever modifications need to be made,” he said.

“Our community has always been resilient and strong and has always persevered and I have no doubt that this incredible strength will carry us through together as a family,” Klemnick said.
