Reading under the sun

Local libraries offering summer programs

Posted

While the summer is a time for children to relax and have fun, it is important to find time to read. Libraries across the area are organizing various summer reading programs for children and teens.

These programs offer raffles and other prizes as incentives for participants to practice their reading skills. This summer’s statewide theme will be “Every Hero has a Story,” focusing on superheroes, both fictional and real.

Seaford

The Seaford Public Library will be kicking off its children’s and young adult summer reading programs on June 29 and 30.

Children’s librarian Jackie Lopez says that children can come and have their faces painted and receive temporary tattoos at the kick-off event for the program.

The program will feature story hours on Tuesdays at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Children can look forward to watching “Paddington” and “Penguins of Madagascar.”

Lopez says that the program typically draws more than 500 children. “We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the kickoff event,” she said. “It should be a great summer.”

The library will also be featuring a Young Adult Summer Reading Club, which is designed for students in fifth grade and up. Registration also begins on June 29.

The theme for this year’s club will be “Unmasked.” All are encouraged to come and participate.

Wantagh

The Wantagh Public Library will be kicking off its children’s summer program on June 29 from 3 to 9 p.m. Children and parents are encouraged to come and sign up. The program will run through Aug. 15.

To coincide with the theme, participants will get to interact with local heroes such as firefighters and veterans.

Children are encouraged to come once a week to the library and discuss their book of choice with one of the many high school volunteers. For every 30 minutes they read, children receive a small prize.

The teen summer reading program will begin June 20 and run until July 31. Librarian Jennifer McHugh says that if participants read a book and write a quick review, they will receive one hour of community service credit.
