Wantagh High School’s talented cast and crew drew a full house on opening night of Alain Boublil’s and Claude-Michel Schonberg’s adaptation of Victor Hugo’s epic story, “Les Misérables.”

Under the direction of Heather Romano and vocally directed by Stephanie Haas, the 100-member cast and crew entertained the audience with this inspirational tale of redemption of the human spirit that has touched the hearts of millions. The pit orchestra, under the baton of Mindy Dragovich, amazed theatergoers with the haunting, classical songs, including “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Master of the House,” “At the End of the Day” and “On My Own.”

Kelly Good, Wantagh supervisor of fine and performing arts, explained that the district considers the students’ particular strengths before selecting a production. Play rehearsals began in September.

“Les Miserables’ was a challenging musical that allowed the students to have a variety of stage and musical experiences,” she said.

On stage, Pat Constant starred as Jean Valjen, with Jordan Rabinowitz as Inspector Javert, Ryan Keane as the Bishop of Digne, Tyler Dema as the Factory Foreman and Taylor Costello as Marius Pontmercy. Julie Polack and Sophia Pinciotto played the role of Cosette, while Victoria Frusci and Samantha Sanpietro depicted the devoted Eponine.

Romano explained that the cast, crew and pit orchestra musicians showed great growth as performers.

“The dedication, talent, drive and effort they demonstrated made this a true all-star production,” she said. “I am beyond proud.”
