When news broke on Monday night that a State Supreme Court judge in Nassau County had ruled Governor Kathy Hochul’s mask mandate unconstitutional, many parents immediately wondered how that would affect their school-age children. Oceanside Superintendent of Schools Dr. Phyllis Harrington sent a letter to district parents and staff on Monday night that the district will go mask optional for now.

Certified Broadcast Meteorologist and Space & Science Journalist Meredith Garofalo of News 12 met with third-grade students at School #2 last Thursday to talk about how meteorologists formulate their weather forecasts. The students are currently studying water and weather in science, learning about the tools used to measure weather, different types of clouds, and severe weather phenomena. Third-grade teacher Kaitlyn Vidafar arranged the video conference through a mutual contact, with all third-grade classes participating.

Hempstead Town Hall was the site of a three-hour battle last Wednesday over variances sought for a proposed three-story Sunrise Senior Living facility at Atlantic and Terrell avenues in Oceanside. Attorneys and zoning experts from both sides made their cases to the Hempstead Board of Zoning Appeals for an hour and a half each. The BZA did not reach a decision that night.
