100 miles in 100 days to save lives

In 1987 Frank Morizio, Jr. lost his father to leukemia. Had there been a matching bone marrow donor his father might have been saved, but back then the donor list was small and a match could not be found. Now Oceansider Morizio is running to raise money and awareness for the bone marrow donor program Be The Match.

He joined the By The Mile for Be the Match campaign to help find volunteer bone marrow donors for people with blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma.

The former Marine runs to cadence and sings loud and proud as he racks up the miles. He explained that the 100-day post transplant is the most critical for bone marrow transplant patients, and once they pass that threshold the chances of recovery increase dramatically.

Financial donations help those without insurance coverage, add more donors to the list, and fund research. Morizio’s goal is $5,000.

Morizio, and his running team will wrap up his 100 miles on September 19, in the Be The Match 5K run on Roosevelt Island in New York City.
