Fall festivals around Long Island

Fall is a delightful time at Old Westbury Gardens as the change of seasons brings about colorful changes to the array of flowers and fauna. The Gardens also take on a different dimension during this time of year, as new visitors will appear among the greenery, in the form of Jack O’Lanterns, in what is known as “The Rise of the Jack O’Lanterns,” weekend evenings throughout October.
Local sculptors and artists have created individually crafted Jack O’Lanterns that exude a unique style and expression in this unusual exhibit. “The overall effect of viewing these thousands of illuminated pieces of art on a long and winding trail on the majestic grounds of Old Westbury Gardens is truly overwhelming,” said Gardens spokesperson Vince Kish.
“The Rise of the Jack O’Lanterns” will certainly get everyone in the Halloween spirit, but it is not designed to be scary, it is more of a Halloween-themed art show, complete with music.
Of course, the Gardens themselves are always a focal point this time of year. “Understandably, many visitors to Old Westbury Gardens think in terms of the spring and summer as the primary seasons to visit here,” said Kish. “But there’s actually a lot going on in October. Our weekend evening event, “The Rise of the Jack O’Lanterns,” is already proving to be a crowd pleaser, and will very likely become an annual favorite. By day, the weather is a little brisk, facilitating long, invigorating walks on our 200 bucolic acres. The Walled Garden is still filled with flowers. And as the thousands of deciduous trees start to lose their colorful leaves, new unique vistas that are not available at other times of the year are revealed.”
“When you add in “The Rise of the Jack O’Lanterns” and our other events, not to mention our magnificent mansion, it’s clear that this is really the place to be in the fall.”
