A fire broke out at a recycling facility on East Hawthorne Avenue at about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday and was quickly extinguished by the Valley Stream Fire Department.

“It’s not an uncommon thing to happen at a recycling facility,” said Chief James Ervolino, who said that members of the Nassau County Fire Marshal's office were working to determine what caused the blaze.

The fire burned at Gershow Recycling, at 97 E. Hawthorne Ave., for about 20 minutes before firefighters deemed the situation under control. No injuries were reported.

The Hewlett, Elmont, Lynbrook and Malvern fire departments also responded.
