Local kids raise cash for cancer

Washing cars for charity

Seven-year-old East Meadow resident Jack Egan was riding in the family car when he announced he wanted to have a car wash to help people with cancer. “I wanted to raise money for charity,” said Jack, “I asked my friends if they could help and most said OK.”

While Jack and his enthusiastic crew did the bulk of the washing, Jack’s parents, Tom and cancer survivor mom Theresa, assisted with set-up details like promoting the Sept. 15 event on Facebook, securing approval to use water and the parking lot of their condominium and making signs.

Parents also helped by washing the tops of cars when the kids, whose ages spanned from 10 years old to two-and-a half, couldn’t reach. Car owners were asked to donate any amount they wanted for the wash.

No one counted the number of cars, but the kids raised $862 by the end of the day. “It was Jack’s idea,” Tom said proudly. “I know he was thinking of his mom, and we all know how important it is to raise awareness and money for cancer research. Thank you to everyone who lent a hand.”
