All snow and smiles at ‘Sled Hill’

East Meadow kids went back to school on Feb. 12 for one more day before the scheduled winter break, after many decided to spend parts of their snow days at "Sled Hill" in Eisenhower Park's Parking Field No. 1.

Schools were closed on Feb. 10 and Feb. 11 in East Meadow due to the blizzard that swept through Long Island and the region.

The decision to close school on Wednesday came earlier than usual, just before 4 p.m. on Feb. 9. Louis DeAngelo, superintendent of schools, explained the reasoning behind that decision.

"What led us to make the early decision to close was the definitiveness of the weather alert and concern for many parents who would need to make child-care arrangements," DeAngelo said.

More than a foot of snow dropped on East Meadow and Salisbury in the early morning hours of Feb. 10 into the late evening, which led to the district's decision to close for a second straight day.
