Crowds of bargain hunters hit the stores on the day after Thanksgiving, looking for shopping values in big stores and small. The next day, Saturday, is being promoted this year as Small Business Saturday, when consumers are urged to patronize their local small businesses, the same neighborhood businesses that contribute donations and local property taxes all year long. Nassau County and New York State governments have high hopes that sales in large chain stores and smaller local stores all show an increase this year so that sales tax revenues can help lower their deficits.
