The Long Beach Fire Department responded to numerous EMS calls and motor vehicle accidents last Saturday night, including an overturned vehicle on the 200 block of East Walnut Street around 1 a.m. early Sunday morning.

According to Fire Chief Richard Corbett, the driver was able to remove himself from the vehicle, described as a 2007 grey Honda, before firefighters arrived on the scene. The driver, a male and the sole occupant of the vehicle, suffered minor injuries and after a medical examination by the LBFD refused medical treatment.

Long Beach Police officers that responded to the scene detected the smell of alcohol on the driver’s breath, according to a police spokesman. Police said that the driver stated he hit a pothole, causing the vehicle to flip over. The man was arrested and charged with a DWI at 1:20 a.m. and taken to Police Headquarters where he consented to a Breathalyzer test at 2:48 a.m.
