Chandra Ortiz is the right pick for tax receiver

For the past 18 years, Donald Clavin has filled the role of Town of Hempstead receiver of taxes, and now that he is running for supervisor, the position must be filled.

The role is as direct as it sounds: collect taxes from residents in the largest town in the U.S. The receiver should be non-partisan and is not involved in policy making.

Democrat Chandra Ortiz is the candidate who appears most passionate about taking on the role and fostering trust in taxpayers. She has an extensive background in real estate law, 20 years of experience running her own legal practice and knowledge of taxes through her work in the Tax Certiorari and Condemnation Bureau of the county attorney’s office.

Asked about the issues facing the receiver’s office, Jenanine Driscoll was quick to defer to problems regarding the Nassau County reassessment. On this front, she is too comfortable with the status quo, lauding the receiver’s office for being transparent and fair while criticizing the county assessor in clearly partisan language. We were unsure why this was an issue for Driscoll to address, however, given that reassessment would be outside of her jurisdiction as town tax receiver.

We should also note that Ortiz immediately connected with us and answered our questions in an apt and timely manner when we reached out to her for information. From that, we understood how much she wants to be tax receiver. By contrast, we found her opponent to be unresponsive.

We strongly encourage you to cast your ballots for Chandra Ortiz.
