Health Assessment.There will be a health assessment with June Friedel, R.N. every first Tuesday of the month at 10 A.M. in the Five Towns Senior Center. This complete one-on-one health assessment includes blood pressure, drug compatibility and discussion about your health concerns in total privacy. It's sponsored by the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs.

Kindness Week. Something new is occurring in our own backyard! Our local schools and PTAs have joined together to celebrate "Random Acts of Kindness Week." This extraordinary event is being coordinated by Tempo Group and The Margaret Basner Parenting Center on Sunday, Nov. 12, 12-3 P.M. (Rain or Shine), 112 Franklin Place, Woodmere (374-4559). As a community, the "Acts of Kindness" program will be collecting food and clothing to benefit "Rock and Wrap it Up!" To help rebuild the library of Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Center Nursery School the program will be collecting new and gently-used books.

The Friday- Woodmere Music Club,
will be holding a concert at the Hewlett-Woodmere Library on Friday, Nov. 10, at 11 A.M.

Peace in Israel? There will be a Five Towns Forum held at the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library on Friday, Nov. 17 at 8 P.M. (coffee and cake 7:30 P.M.) The topic of discussion: "Is it possible to craft a lasting and comprehensive peace between Israel and the Palestinians?" Phyllis Bennis, Fellow of Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C. specialist on U.N. and Middle East issues, will speak.

The Strauss-Battel Duo. There will be a Harp-Flute concert at the Rock Hall Museum, at 199 Broadway in Lawrence. The featured artists are the Strauss-Battel Duo. They will perform on Sunday, Nov. 12, from 2 PM. to 3:30 P.M. Reservations are required. The fee is $7; $5 for members.

Fall Bazaar. There will be a Fall Bazaar sponsored by the Town of Hempstead Department of Senior Enrichment on Wednesday, Nov. 15, from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. It will be held at the Cedarhurst Senior Center, Village Hall, 200 Cedarhurst Ave. There will be refreshments, gifts, free admission, crafts, white elephant, and cakes. For more info call 295-1177.

HAFTR Open House. The Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway High School will hold an open house on Sunday, Nov. 12 from Noon to 3P.M. It's for 8th grade students and parents. HAFTR High School is located at 635 Central Ave. in Cedarhurst.

Coats For Kids. Do you have a winter coat you don't use? Are you cleaning out your closets? Don't throw them out. Keep a child warm this winter by donating unwanted children's coats at: Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg's office, 20 West Park Avenue, Long Beach. Call 431-0500. Office hours 9 A.M.-5 P.M. The Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library offers 55 Alive/mature driving courses on an on-going basis to residents of School District 14. For courses and registration dates, call the library at 374-1967.

Open. The Peninsula Public Library will open on Saturday, Nov. 11, from 1 P.M. to 5 P.M. in observance of Veterans' Day.

Minding the Score. Ms. Wolff is the Founder and Artistic Director of Music at Lake Willoughby. Well-known for her concert career as a pianist and educator, the afternoon's concert will be a culmination of her lecture-recitals entitled "Minding the Score." This will be held at the H-W Library on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 2:30 P.M.

Enjoyment of Music. The second of three fascinating lecture-demonstrations devoted to the Classical Style. Pianist and music educator, Dr. Judith Alstadter will examine the lives and music of Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven. It will be held at the H-W Library on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at 10:30 A.M.

Storycraft. Celebrate National Children's Book Week. Join the H-W Library for a story and a craft. Registration is limited and began on Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 10 A.M. and 7 P.M. in the Children's Room at the H-W Library. Please bring library card to register. The event will take place on Monday, Nov. 13 at 4 P.M. or Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 4 P.M.

The Chinese Silk Road. A fascinating slides and lecture series about the famous Silk Road, this historic artery in western China. See cities and deserts that were written about by Marco Polo and the paths followed by camel caravans for more than 2000 years. Modern China, Central Asia, and Europe were shaped by the many travelers who crisscrossed the continents on this famous road.

Religious News

Jews of Portugal. The community is invited to a special seminar "Celebration of the Jews Portugal," a program of lectures, music and "noshing." The event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 8 P.M. at the Sephardic Temple, 775 Branch Boulevard, Cedarhurst.

Breast Cancer Lecture. The Five Towns Jewish Council, Temple Beth El, National Council of Jewish Women, Peninsula Section, 1 in 9- The Long Island Breast Cancer will attend. The event will be held at Temple Beth El, Broadway and Locust Ave., Cedarhurst, on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 8 P.M. Featured speakers include Dr. Harry Ostrer, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Pathology at NYU School of Medicine, who will discuss the Genetics of Breast Cancer.

Jewish Cadet Choir. The Temple Sinai of Long Island is proud to welcome, the Jewish Cadet Choir from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, to observe Veterans' Day on Friday, Nov. 10 at 8 P.M., 131 Washington Ave.

Israeli Dancing. Reconstructionist Congregation Beth Emeth, 36 Franklin Ave., Hewlett, will begin an Israeli Dance class taught by Marion Sharin starting on Monday, Nov. 20, at the temple. Art Auction. Reconstructionist Congregation Beth Emeth, 36 Franklin Avenue, Hewlett is sponsoring an Art Auction Saturday night, Nov. 18, at the temple. There will be a preview at 7 P.M. and the auction will start at 8:30 P.M. Refreshments such as wine, cheese, coffee and cake will be served. Admission is $10. Nassau Region of Hadassah's Ivrit L'Hadassah classes, which teach Hebrew literacy and conversation, are continuing in the Five Towns. Dr. Annette Labovitz, Ph.D, is presenting an advanced course on Monday mornings at Temple Beth El in Cedarhurst and Ferne Skiba is teaching an intermediate course at the Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Center. Torah Seminars for Women. L.I.C.C. Training. Long Island Crisis Center is looking for volunteers. L..I.C.C. offers a 24/7 hotline, internet counseling seven days a week, 2 P.M. to 11 P.M. Call to set up an interview at 826-0244.

Separated and Divorced. A new, 12-session group for those in the process of separation and divorce began on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at the Peninsula Counseling Center's Lynbrook office at 381 Sunrise Highway, 2nd floor. Fees are based on a sliding scale and most insurance plans are accepted.

Joy of Painting. Woodmere artist, Iris Gorenberg will "share the joy of painting" at the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library. Individualized instruction in oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, charcoal, and pen and ink, as well as clay modeling will be included. Chesed Organization. Kesher is a local youth-based chesed organization developed to promote acts of kindness in the community. They are currently collecting items in new or like new condition to distribute to those in need. Tax receipts are available upon request for all donations made. Temple Hillel Sisterhood will collect non-perishable, kosher food for distribution to hungry children and families. Everything from peanut butter and pasta to tuna and toaster pastry is needed and will be picked up weekly by United Jewish Appeal for distribution to needy families. The program began on Monday, Sept. 18 and will continue every Monday and Tuesday during Hebrew School hours, 4 P.M. to 6 P.M. The community is urged to take part in this community outreach program. YM & YWHA Programs. The Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA is happy to announce some wonderful programs for retired, enthusiastic adults. Shalom Club meets every Monday at 1 P.M. at the "Y," 207 Grove Avenue, Cedarhurst. The group begins with a Stretch and Flex Class followed by a wide variety of wonderful and informative programs. Golden Circle meets every Tuesday at 12 P.M. at Temple Beth El, Broadway and Locust, in Cedarhurst. Starting with refreshments and light exercise, this group always has interesting lectures or entertainment for all to enjoy.

Senior Spotlight

The Five Towns Senior Center. Every Wednesday at 10 A.M. there will be a Drama Discussion led by Harold Engel. Every Thursday at 10 A.M. there will be a singing group led by Ruth Shuster. Basic Bridge Instruction will be Wednesdays at 12:45 P.M., led by Diane Goldstein.

Adult Day Care. The Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA holds an adult social day care program for frail and or physically challenged older adults. The program includes social activities, recreational crafts, exercise, yoga, nutrition education, kosher lunches, counseling and nursing support services. We provide an intimate caring environment in which our seniors flourish. "Come Alive" offers stimulating programs and enriching new friendships in a family atmosphere. The program meets on Mondays and Thursdays and kosher lunches are served. Limited transportation is provided. 5T Senior Center Classes. "Low Impact Exercise" will now be held on Friday mornings at 10 A.M., beginning Sept. 8. "Mixed Media Painting" with Estelle Ginsburg will continue in September on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 A.M. "Beginning Drawing and Painting" with Jayne Saint Armour will begin on Monday, Sept. 1, at 12:45 P.M. Beginners are welcome. 55 Alive Driving Course. Registration is now open for the "55 Alive" driving course given through AARP at the Young Israel Senior League, located at 2716 Healy Avenue, Far Rockaway.

Bereavement Group. The Greater Five Towns YM and YWHA will be offering a Bereavement Group starting Tuesday, November 14, at 2 P.M. The objective of this six-week group is to provide support for the recently bereaved in a caring and warm atmosphere. There will be the opportunity to work through grief, examine feelings and discover inner strengths. This group will be held at the Greater Five Towns YM and YWHA, located at 207 Grove Avenue, Cedarhurst. A $40 pre-registration fee is required. For more info call 569-6733.

Bereavement Group. The Peninsula Counseling Center is starting a new bereavement support group for recent widows and widowers, Thursday evenings beginning November 16 from 7 to 8:30p.m. at PCC's Woodmere office, 124 Franklin Place. adjusting to life without a loved one is painful, but a supportive and caring group environment can help the healing process. Parkinson's Support Group Foundation of Long Island,in cooperation with the Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA, has formed "Tuesday Activity Center," a group for individuals suffering from Parkinson's disease and their spouses and families, at the " Y," 207 Grove Avenue in Cedarhurst, from 11 A.M. to 3 P.M. Peninsula Counseling Center is offering a new program for adults with severe physical disabilities. "Out and About" brings physically disabled adults together on Thursdays for three hours of socializing, sharing ideas and discussion of a variety of topics. The group, which meets weekly at Temple Emanu-El in Lynbrook, is looking for new members as well as guest speakers.

Stretch and Flex Class. The Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA will host a Summer Friendship Circle, starting Monday, July 10, at 11 A.M. The six-week group will begin with a Stretch and Flex Class followed by a bring your own brown bag lunch and socialize, then conclude with lectures on contemporary life issues.
