Assemblyman honored. The National Council of Jewish Women, Peninsula Section, will honor State Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg with the prestigious Hannah G. Solomon Award on November 1, at the Woodmere Club on Meadow Dr.

Health Assessment.There will be a health assessment with June Friedel, R.N. every first Tuesday of the month at 10 A.M. in the Five Towns Senior Center. This complete one-on-one health assessment includes blood pressure, drug compatibility and discussion about your health concerns in total privacy. It's sponsored by the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs.

Special Event



Church Fair. On Saturday, Nov. 4th, a fair will take place at Incarnation Lutheran Church, 411 Bayview Ave. (corner of West Broadway), Cedarhurst. The Fair hours are 10-3. There will be tables with crafts, baked goods, a yard sale table and a lucky number game and raffles. A luncheon of homemade foods begins at 11:30.

5T Symphony Orchestra.The Rockaway-Five Towns Symphony Orchestra has moved its concerts to the very beautiful auditorium of the Lawrence Middle School, at 195 Broadway in Lawrence. The first concert will present Morton Gould's "Salute to America" and Aaron Copland's "Hoe Down" from his 'Rodeo' Suite, in honor of Veteran's Day. The Woodwind and Horn sections of the orchestra, will be featured in one of Haydn's early symphonies, the Symphony No. 6 titled "Matin". It is part of a trilogy of three symphonies called Morning, Noon, Night.

The Friday- Woodmere Music Club,
will be holding a concert at the Hewlett-Woodmere Library on Friday, November 10 at 11 A.M.

Stories by the Fireside- Sarah, Plain and Tall-will be told at Rock Hall Museum, 199 Broadway in Lawrence, on Saturday, November 4, from 10:30 A.M. to noon. It is for girls, ages 7 to 11, who love the adventure of reading and to listen to stories in the parlor at historic Rock Hall. Space is limited. The fee is $3.50 per session.

The Strauss-Battel Duo. There will be a Harp-Flute concert at the Rock Hall Museum, located at 199 Broadway in Lawrence. The featured artists are the Strauss-Battel Duo. They will perform on Sunday November 12 from 2p.m. to 3:30p.m. Reservations are required. Fee $7. Members $5.

Fall Bazaar. There will be a Fall Bazaar sponsored by the Town of Hempstead Department of Senior Enrichment on Wednesday, November 15 from 10am to 2pm. It will be held at the Cedarhurst Senior Center, Village Hall, 200 Cedarhurst Ave. There will be refreshments, gifts, free admission, crafts, white elephant, and cakes. For more info call 295-1177.

HAFTR Open House. The Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway High School will hold an open house on Sunday, November 12 from Noon to 3p.m. For 8th grade students and parents. HAFTR High School 635 Central Ave. in Cedarhurst.

Book Review: Human Stain The National Council of Jewish Women, Peninsula Section, will present a book review of the Human Stain by Philip Roth on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 1p.m. at the Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Center. Linda Judenberg, known for her provocative and stimulating style, will conduct the review. The program is open to members only and there will be a fee of $4. Coats For Kids. Do you have a winter coat you don't use? Are you cleaning out your closets? Don't throw them out. Keep a child warm this winter by donating unwanted children's coats at: Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg's office, 20 West Park Avenue, Long Beach. Call 431-0500. Office hours 9 A.M.-5 P.M. All coats collected will be dry cleaned free of charge by: Delta Cleaners, 83 East Park Ave., Long Beach, and forwarded to "Coats for Kids" for distribution to needy families.

Library News

The Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library offers 55 Alive/mature driving courses on an on-going basis to residents of School District 14. For courses and registration dates, call the library at 374-1967.

Open. The Peninsula Public Library will open on Saturday, November 11 from 1PM to 5PM in observance of Veteran's Day.

Religious News

Jews of Portugal. The community is invited to a special seminar "Celebration of the Jews Portugal" . A program of lectures, music and "noshing". The event will take place on Thursday, November 9 at 8PM at the Sephardic Temple, 775 Branch Boulevard, Cedarhurst , NY.

Jewish Cadet Choir. The Temple Sinai of Long Island is proud to welcome, the Jewish Cadet Choir from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, to observe Veteran's Day on Friday, November 10 at 8p.m., 131 Washington Ave.

Israeli Dancing. Reconstructionist Congregation Beth Emeth, 36 Franklin Ave., Hewlett will begin an Israeli Dance class taught by Marion Sharin starting on Monday, November 20th at the temple. Art Auction. Reconstructionist Congregation Beth Emeth, 36 Franklin Avenue, Hewlett is sponsoring an Art Auction Saturday night, November 18th at the temple. There will be a preview at 7p.m. and the auction will start at 8:30p.m. Refreshments such as wine, cheese, coffee and cake will be served. Admission is $10. Sunday Breakfast. The Five Towns Jewish Council will be holding a breakfast on Sunday, November 5 at 9:30a.m. at the Chabad Center at 74 Maple St. in Cedarhurst. Gary Rosenblatt, editor and publisher of the " Jewish Week," will speak.

Adult Ed. at Jewish Centre. Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre proudly announces a three evening Adult Education lecture series featuring noted speaker Dr. Robert Goldenberg. The series began on Tuesday, October 24 and is open to all, free of charge. The second lecture was held on October 31 and the last on November 7. All lectures begin at 8:30PM. Dr. Goldberg will be speaking on "The Ancient Roots of Modern Jewish Life-Religion, Culture, Politics.

The Young Israel of Woodmere offers a Torah study and beginner's prayer service class on Sunday mornings at 10:30. The synagogue is also holding a series of Hebrew reading classes for beginners on Wednesdays at 8 P.M. For further information and to register, one may call 295-0150.

Nassau Region of Hadassah's Ivrit L'Hadassah classes, which teach Hebrew literacy and conversation, are continuing in the Five Towns. Dr. Annette Labovitz, Ph.D, is presenting an advanced course on Monday mornings at Temple Beth El in Cedarhurst and Ferne Skiba is teaching an intermediate course at the Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Center. Hebrew Classes.The Young Israel of Hewlett is offering Reading Hebrew Level 2, "Learn to read from a Sidur," Sunday mornings at 10:30 A.M. and "Bible Basics" Thursday mornings 9:30 A.M.-10:30 A.M. Young Israel is located at 1 Piermont Ave. in Hewlett.

Torah Seminars for Women. OU Torah Seminars for women are offered Sunday mornings at the West Side Institutional Synagogue on West 76th Street in Manhattan; Monday evenings at Congregation Adereth El on East 29th Street, also in Manhattan; and Tuesday evenings at the Young Israel of Woodmere, 859 Peninsula Boulevard. Tuition is $100 per course; $75 for three or more courses. L.I.C.C. Training. Long Island Crisis Center is looking for volunteers. L..I.C.C. offers a 24/7 hotline, internet counseling seven days a week, 2 P.M. to 11 P.M. Call to set up an interview at 826-0244.

Separated and Divorced. A new, 12-session group for those in the process of separation and divorce began on Tuesday, October 17, at the Peninsula Counseling Center's Lynbrook office at 381 Sunrise Highway, 2nd floor. Meetings begin promptly at 7:15PM. Call Laurie Forman, CSW, at 599-1181 to pre-register. All inquiries are strictly confidential. Fees are based on a sliding scale and most insurance plans are accepted.

Joy of Painting. Woodmere artist, Iris Gorenberg will "share the joy of painting" at the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library. Individualized instruction in oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, charcoal, and pen and ink, as well as clay modeling will be included. Chesed Organization. Kesher is a local youth-based chesed organization developed to promote acts of kindness in the community. They are currently collecting items in new or like new condition to distribute to those in need. Tax receipts are available upon request for all donations made. Temple Hillel Sisterhood will collect non-perishable, kosher food for distribution to hungry children and families. Everything from peanut butter and pasta to tuna and toaster pastry is needed and will be picked up weekly by United Jewish Appeal for distribution to needy families. The program began on Monday, September 18 and will continue every Monday and Tuesday during Hebrew School hours, 4 P.M. to 6 P.M. YM & YWHA Programs. The Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA is happy to announce some wonderful programs for retired, enthusiastic adults. Shalom Club meets every Monday at 1 P.M. at the "Y," 207 Grove Avenue, Cedarhurst. The group begins with a Stretch and Flex Class followed by a wide variety of wonderful and informative programs. Golden Circle meets every Tuesday at 12 P.M. at Temple Beth El, Broadway and Locust, in Cedarhurst. Starting with refreshments and light exercise, this group always has interesting lectures or entertainment for all to enjoy.

Senior Spotlight

The Five Towns Senior Center. Every Wednesday at 10 A.M. there will be a Drama Discussion led by Harold Engel. Every Thursday at 10 A.M. there will be a singing group led by Ruth Shuster. Basic Bridge Instruction will be Wednesdays at 12:45 P.M., led by Diane Goldstein.

Adult Day Care. The Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA holds an adult social day care program for frail and or physically challenged older adults. The program includes social activities, recreational crafts, exercise, yoga, nutrition education, kosher lunches, counseling and nursing support services. We provide an intimate caring environment in which our seniors flourish. "Come Alive" offers stimulating programs and enriching new friendships in a family atmosphere. The program meets on Mondays and Thursdays and kosher lunches are served. Limited transportation is provided. 5T Senior Center Classes. "Low Impact Exercise" will now be held on Friday mornings at 10 A.M., beginning September 8. Miriam Sharin returns on Tuesdays in September at 10 A.M. for her famous "Israeli Folk and Line Dance" class. "Mixed Media Painting" with Estelle Ginsburg will continue in September on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 A.M. "Beginning Drawing and Painting" with Jayne Saint Armour will begin on Monday, September 1, at 12:45 P.M. Beginners are welcome. "Bingo with Rosalie" join the fun Thursday mornings at 10 A.M., beginning September 7.

55 Alive Driving Course. Registration is now open for the "55 Alive" driving course given through AARP at the Young Israel Senior League, located at 2716 Healy Avenue, Far Rockaway.

Bereavement Group. The Peninsula Counseling Center is starting a new bereavement support group for recent widows and widowers, Thursday evenings beginning November 16 from 7 to 8:30p.m. at PCC's Woodmere office, 124 Franklin Place. adjusting to life without a loved one is painful, but a supportive and caring group environment can help the healing process. Parkinson's Support Group Foundation of Long Island,in cooperation with the Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA, has formed "Tuesday Activity Center," a group for individuals suffering from Parkinson's disease and their spouses and families, at the " Y," 207 Grove Avenue in Cedarhurst, from 11 A.M. to 3 P.M. The purpose is to allow a better understanding of Parkinson's, and proper exercise. Call 569-6733.

Peninsula Counseling Center is offering a new program for adults with severe physical disabilities. "Out and About" brings physically disabled adults together on Thursdays for three hours of socializing, sharing ideas and discussion of a variety of topics. The group, which meets weekly at Temple Emanu-El in Lynbrook, is looking for new members as well as guest speakers.

Bereavement Group. The Greater Five Towns YM and YWHA will be offering a Bereavement Group starting Tuesday, July 11, at 2 P.M. The objective of this six-week group is to provide support for the recently bereaved in a caring and warm atmosphere. There will be the opportunity to work through grief, examine feelings and discover inner strengths. This group will be held at the Greater Five Towns YM and YWHA, located at 207 Grove Avenue, Cedarhurst. A $40 pre-registration fee is required. For more info call 569-6733.

Stretch and Flex Class. The Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA will host a Summer Friendship Circle, starting Monday, July 10, at 11 A.M. The six-week group will begin with a Stretch and Flex Class followed by a bring your own brown bag lunch and socialize, then conclude with lectures on contemporary life issues.
