Police are investigating a hit and run on July 16 at around 10 p.m. in Island Park where a driver allegedly struck a 16-year-old female bicyclist, got out of his car to yell at her and then drove off. The teenager reportedly suffered minor injuries.

According to detectives and the girl’s mother, Nicole Colletti of Island Park, the teenager was riding her bicycle north on Quebec Road and was struck by a white Jeep with gold New York license plates heading west on Warwick road. He then reportedly got out of the Jeep, yelled at her as she lay on the ground and the sped off after returning to his vehicle.

“She really doesn’t remember much, but she remembers him yelling at her,” Colletti said of her daughter’s recollection of the incident. “She remembers seeing the car coming at her then she remembers suddenly she’s laying on the ground and the guy was screaming at her, then he got in his car and drove off, and just left her lying in the street.”

Police described the driver as “a male Hispanic, who was driving an older-model white Jeep Cherokee with black racks on the roof.”

Colletti reported that her family transported the girl to South Nassau Communities Hospital where doctors determined that she had suffered minor injuries, but may have lost consciousness in the crash. “Everything came back normal thank god,” she said of the test results. “She had CT scans and a ton of X-rays. We didn’t get home ‘till about 5 a.m.”

Police are asking that anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 244-8477.
