Cops nab two for larcenies

Local police made two arrests last week after a rash of larcenies in Rockville Centre from Oct. 2 to 6.

More than 10 residents reported thefts of money or valuables, police said, adding that most of what was stolen was taken from unlocked cars, and included four GPS units that disappeared on Oct. 2 alone. The first suspect, Damien Whitmore, 24, of Pleasant Avenue in Roosevelt, was arrested that afternoon, after the Rockville Centre Police Department received a call about a suspicious person.

“We arrested that guy,” said Police Commissioner Charles Gennario. “Charged him with 10 break-ins... Our guys did a nice job.”

Whitmore, who, according to police, is a member of Roosevelt’s Bloods gang, was taken into custody on South Lewis Place after a brief struggle, and in searching the area, police found enough loot to charge Whitmore with 15 counts of larceny and possession of stolen property, as well as criminal trespassing.

Nassau County police followed up on Whitmore’s arrest with one of their own. After being notified by the RVCPD, officers from the NCPD’s 4th Precinct arrested Kenneth “Tata” Edwards, 21, a known member of the Roosevelt Crips, on a number of open warrants. Though the RVCPD did not provide details, it said that Edwards is also suspected of involvement in the larcenies.

“This was excellent, alert police work by our officers,” Gennario said of Whitmore’s arrest. “Although they initially did not find the subject, they persevered and made an arrest of a subject that committed many offenses in our community.”
