Join the fire department

The East Meadow Fire Department opened its doors during the Second Annual Recruit N.Y. Weekend last month. The statewide effort helps to draw new volunteer members and coincided with National Volunteer Week.

“Over the last several years, it has been tough for many fire departments to recruit and retain volunteers for many reasons, including the turbulent economy,” said David Jacobowitz, president of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York. “Recruit N.Y. is an important initiative to help bolster membership numbers so that fire departments can continue to provide the optimum level of protection to their residents.”

“Volunteer firefighters protect our homes and communities 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Nassau County’s bravest are our friends and neighbors, and they take pride in helping our communities whenever and wherever support is needed,” said County Executive Ed Mangano. “Now more than ever, they need our help so they can continue to protect the residents of Nassau County.”

Men and women headed out during the EMFD recruitment weekend to learn more about what it takes to be volunteer firefighters and medical technicians.
