On a sunny Saturday afternoon the emergency medical services professionals of Nassau University Medical Center and first responders of the East Meadow Fire Department gathered together for their annual softball game to kick off National EMS Week.

The game, known as the “Stitch & Pitch,” was filled with fun and laughter as teams belted out runs inning after inning. But this was not just a game. It was a chance for our EMS system to continue a friendship and bond of camaraderie indicative of the teamwork these two agencies represent. A chance, just for one day, to be removed from the everyday pressure of being the best they can be, together, to save lives.

This year, the EMS system in the East Meadow Fire District has had its share of life-saving events. Undoubtedly, a few residents are living testimony that the dedication and care of our doctors and nurses are equal to that of our pre-hospital volunteers and vice versa.

In the end, it was the EMFD that took the victory over our NUMC counterparts. Congratulations to all those involved. Your efforts have made our EMS system one of the best on Long Island.

National EMS Week is May 20-26. Don’t forget to thank your local volunteers.
