Freeport Kiwanis honors Fire Department

In honor of Kiwanis Club’s 100th anniversary, the local chapter presented Freeport Fire Department officials with a pediatric trauma kit at Monday’s Village Board meeting. Freeport chapter President Greg Abbate said the kit would help firefighters render assistance to small children who might otherwise not receive proper care.

The kit contains an aspirator, oxygen mask, burn-treatment articles, a first-aid kit and several other pieces.

Accepting the kit on behalf of the Fire Department was Capt. Ralph Saint Eloi of Emergency Co. 9, current and past lieutenant governors of the Long Island Southwest District Peter Mientenkorte, Patrick Buckland and Bruce Brooks, Third Assistance Chief Alfredo Ruiz, Deputy Chief Tommy Butler and member Ken Bellefiore.

Kiwanis International provides the kits to local communities through its Pediatric Trauma Center.

A brief regular agenda meeting of the village board followed in which trustees retroactively approved the emergency repair of a broken sewer main on North Main Street by Bancker Construction Corp. of Islandia for $30,227.

Audience member Frank Grossman questioned where the funds would come from, since the village budget did not include funding for such an expense. But Mayor Robert Kennedy assured him that money was available and invited Mr. Grossman to come to his office to discuss the issue.

In other actions, board members:

•Approved two block party permits for 171 Jay St. on Aug. 29 and 280 Pine St., on Sept. 6 and a parade, a public assembly permit for Catholic Charities to hold a Breastfeeding Awareness Walk on Aug. 14 beginning at Randall Park, and a public assembly permit for a concert Aug. 8 on behalf of First Baptist Church, 1:30-9:30 p.m.

•Approved a state Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery Affirmative Action and citizen participation plans.

•Amended traffic rules to forbid vehicles from standing, stopping or parking on the west Side of Westend Avenue from the southern curb line of Atlantic Avenue.

•Awarded requests for the website development and administration agreement with CivicPlus of Manhattan, Kansas, and approved the adoption of a new section of the Village Code relating to grievances and policies of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 for Freeport.

Mayor Kennedy and trustees ended the meeting by praising village officials and employees for the successful visit last weekend of the Naval Academy cadets.
