Golf outing raises more than $12K for ailing Lynbrook police sergeant

Jeff Greenfield announced at the Aug. 20 village board meeting that July’s Mayor’s Golf Outing netted $15,000 to benefit ailing Lynbrook Police Department Sgt. Ronald Fleury and the Lynbrook Community Chest.

“We had our most successful golf outing ever,” said Greenfield, the chairman of the committee that organizes the event. “We had the most golfers ever at the outing and had very good financial results. It far surpassed any prior years.”

Greenfield lauded his committee members for their hard work and the Lynbrook Police Benevolent Association for showing their support for Fleury, who was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in February 2017. It is a progressive disease that causes sufferers to eventually lose all muscle control. There is no cure.

The outing raised $12,500 in support of Fleury, his wife, Donna, and their three sons, Christopher, Nicholas and Raymond. Members of the family were at the meeting to accept the donation.

“I know if Ron was able to come here tonight, he would be very grateful to everyone for supporting him,” Donna said. “… We really, really appreciate your support.”

A record 152 golfers took part in the event at the Seawane Club in Hewlett on July 9. About 200 people came to the country club in the evening for a dinner in Fleury’s honor, and police organizations sold T-shirts sporting his name for $30 each, with proceeds going to his family.

The event also raised $2,500 for the Lynbrook Community Chest, which provides financial help to residents who have fallen on hard times. Laura Ryder, the chairwoman for the Community Chest, thanked the golf outing organizers for once again being the top donor and also addressed the Fleurys.

“The love and support of our community is behind your family and you are always in our thoughts and prayers,” she said.

Mayor Alan Beach shared his gratitude to the organizers and got emotional when addressing Donna and the children. “This is a family,” he said. “Those police officers look out for us, and Donna, we will look out for your family.”
