Guido Cirenza dies at 85

Guido Cirenza, the deputy mayor of Valley Stream, died on Tuesday, Oct. 6 with his family by his side. He was 85.

Cirenza was first elected as a trustee to the Village board on the United Community Party ticket along with Mayor James Darcy and trustee Ed Cahill. He was re-elected in 1999, 2003 and 2007, and served as deputy mayor under Cahill since 1999.

In January, Cirenza was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He was given just three months to live and far exceeded that. Cirenza still attended village board meetings until a month ago.

He leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Elena, and five sons, Michael, Emanuel, Bartholomew, Denis and Guido. Cirenza also had 15 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial with final military honors followed at St. Charles Cemetery.
