Hempstead Supervisor honors Central H.S. senior

Katie Mazalkova, the Central High School senior who earned national honors in the2014 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology in December, received an honorary citation in January from Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray.

Mazalkova and her research partner, Jericho High School student William Crugnola, shared a $30,000 scholarship as finalists in the team category for their project on stem cells and how they can be used to treat and cure atherosclerosis. Their research focused on the immune response of macrophage cells that cause plaque buildup and can ultimately contribute to the development of heart disease.

Murray described Mazalkova as an “extraordinary student.”
