Last month, the Hispanic Brotherhood of Rockville Centre held its annual Scholarship Dinner and raised nearly $40,000.

The annual dinner is the Brotherhood’s largest event of the year. It’s an opportunity for the organization to not only raise money, but to award scholarships to kids from Rockville Centre and honor members of the community for their service.

This year’s dinner had more than 300 guests, the largest turnout the Brotherhood has ever had.

This year, the Hispanic Brotherhood honored Fidelis Care, Dr. Jorge L. Gardyn of Island Occupational Medical Resources, Rockville Centre Police Commissioner Charles Gennario, Honorable Thomas Glynn, Betty Lugo, Village of Freeport Trustee Jorge Martinez, Dr. David Rose, the director of World Languages and ESL for the Oceanside School District and Elizabeth Custodio, vice president of Suffolk County National Bank.

The group also awarded five high school seniors scholarships of $1,000 each.

The money raised at the dinner each year goes to fund the scholarships, as well as the Hispanic Brotherhood’s after-school program.
