Historical society to host July 4th reading

Posted

As is the longstanding tradition, the Historical Society of the Merricks will host its annual reading of the Declaration of Independence on the Fourth of July at the Merrick gazebo in Veterans Memorial Plaza in downtown Merrick at 10 a.m.

This annual reading has been a community highlight for more than 30 years. It is a reminder of how, at the start of the Revolutionary War in 1776, villagers gathered to hear news of America's break with Great Britain.

Society President Lawrence Garfinkel said, " This is a good time to spend an hour or so with your children and grandchildren actually demonstrating what this country is all about. Many of those gathered will actually read one line, each making the Declaration a living statement."
